SMBC is seeking an Accountant who  will be responsible for implementing the Bank’s general accounting strategy by preparing daily bank reconciliation reports, daily management reports, reconciliation reports for the GIS sub systems and for the Oracle GL, as well as checking the daily Journal report. In addition the position assists in preparing other Accounting department reports for use by external parties and Head Office. The information is provided for local and corporate management and external auditors.



  • Prepares daily bank reconciliations and follows up on open items as necessary using the Corona bank reconciliation tool, RBC swift reports and other information.
  • Prepares the daily Management reports (including domestic assets, CED report, sub-system reconciliation report, summary balance sheet and income statement)
  • Prepares the daily deposit balances for Business Promotions department and the daily accrued interest report for the Treasury department).
  • Reviews the daily Journal report to identify any discrepancies with postings to the Oracle GL and that all tickets prepared by Treasury and Loan Administration are accounted for daily.
  • Prepares client confirmation request letters (outgoing and incoming) for signature by the VP Accounting.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly/quarterly regulatory reports for submission to the OSFI, The Bank of Canada and to Statistics Canada
  • Prepares monthly reconciliations and analysis of subsystem balances and Oracle ledger balances for review by the VP accounting.
  • Ensures all reports are prepared accurately and on time.
  • Ensures that they are always in full compliance with all of the Bank's policies and procedures, and the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Prepares excel working paper files for use in support of various reports.
  • Maintains proper working paper and electronic files to support all reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of Head Office financial reports according to Japanese GAAP/IFRS.
  • Maintains general ledger account keys and mapping for all subsystem applications and the Oracle general ledger
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Performs the duties of other Accounting department staff when they are absent.





University graduate or equivalent.

Minimum of 2 years previous related experience in a financial institution.

Knowledge of the legislation, regulations and guidelines governing banking in Canada and the Schedule III Banks.

Knowledge of Canadian GAAP (IFRS).

Superior knowledge of computerized accounting systems and use of computer software applications.

Knowledge of credit and lending practices.
