SMBC's Specialized Finance Department is looking for an Associate to help support a five-person US Private Placement team. The group is responsible for originating, structuring and executing private placements of bonds for the firm’s clients. Origination function involves making presentations to prospective issuers of securities across a variety of industries and geographies. Execution involves the sale of securities to institutional investors located mainly in the United States. Position offers potential for growth and promotion commensurate with employee’s abilities and capacity for work.
We are looking for someone with the passion to succeed and help the business grow. The ability to think and communicate clearly orally and in writing is essential for success, as is the willingness to work hard and accept challenges. The small size of the group requires flexibility on the part of all its members, and will allow for ample growth opportunities to the successful candidate.
Our work environment is supportive and collegiate. Because we cover a broad range of industries and geographies, every member of the group is always learning – by conducting research and from each other. A successful candidate will need to be an eager and fast learner, willing to put in the necessary time, and open to being challenged about the boundaries of his or her knowledge. The team works with a number of disparate geographies - a few examples include Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. As a result, hours can be irregular at times. A successful candidate will be asked to travel as he or she gains comfort with the job and its responsibilities.
Assistance with preparation of deal specific and general pitch materials, simple modeling, and participation in internal and external meetings.
Employee would be expected to sit for and pass Series 79, 63 and 7 securities exams within the first six months of employment. SMBC will provide necessary support in the form of an appropriate preparation course.
